Authoritative DNS for a Domain

There is no one authoritative DNS for a domain. Rather, there are several authoritative DNS servers that are used by different networks and companies.

The most authoritative DNS server for a domain is the DNS server that is used by the network that the domain is registered with. The network may be a commercial ISP, a government agency, or a private company.

Other DNS servers may be used as back-up servers in case the primary DNS server goes down. These supplementary DNS servers may be operated by the same company that operates the primary DNS server, by a different company, or by a third-party service.

The DNS server that is used by a network is usually the most up-to-date and reliable DNS server. However, if there is a conflict between the DNS server that is used by the network and the DNS server that is used by the domain, the DNS server that is used by the domain is usually the more reliable server.
