Windows 7 can be a VPN server if you configure the operating system correctly. To be a VPN server, Windows must be configured to use a virtual private network (VPN) connection. To configure Windows 7 to use a VPN connection, open the Network and Sharing Center. Under the Connections heading, click the Settings button. In the Connections settings window, under the Local Area Connection heading, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). In the Properties window, under the Connections heading, click the Security tab. In the Security settings window, under the Virtual Private Network heading, select Use a proxy server for all traffic. (If you do not want to use a proxy server, select Use a proxy server for local network traffic.) In the Address field, type the IP address of your VPN server. In the Port field, type the port of your VPN server. In the Gateway field, type the IP address of your router. In the DNS field, type the IP address of your DNS server. In the Preferred TCP/IP protocol field, select the protocol your VPN server uses. Select the Use the following DNS server addresses field and type the IP address of your DNS server. (By default, the Windows 7 computer uses the DNS server at the IP address of the computer. If you want to use a different DNS server, type the IP address of that DNS server in this field.) Click OK. In the Security settings window, under the Virtual Private Network heading, select Use a VPN connection. In the Connection type field, select PPTP. (If you want to use a different VPN protocol, type the name of the VPN protocol in this field. For example, IKEv2 is the name of a newer VPN protocol.) In the Authentication field, type the username and password of the user account that you want to use to connect to the VPN server. (The default user account is user.) In the Connection security type field, select Use the following security settings. (By default, the Windows 7 computer uses the Windows authentication protocol. (The default security setting is Windows authentication. In the Connections window, under the Local Area Connection heading, click the VPN heading.
