VPN changes DNS server behavior when connecting to an unknown or unsecured network. By default, your home or work network uses your ISP’s DNS servers. However, when you connect to a VPN, the VPN provides its own DNS servers. This means that when you connect to a VPN, your computer will use the VPN’s DNS servers to look up website addresses instead of your ISP’s DNS servers.

This can improve your privacy and security because the VPN’s DNS servers are not likely to be shared with or monitored by your ISP. However, your computer will still use your ISP’s DNS servers to lookup addresses when connected to the public internet. Therefore, using a VPN will not change your computer’s normal DNS behavior.
