VPNs, or virtual private networks, offer a secure way to connect to the internet from anywhere in the world. To access VPN settings in Windows 10, open the Settings app and click on the Network & Internet category.
(If you don’t see this category on the left, click on the three lines in the top left corner of the Settings app.) From here, click on the VPN subcategory.
To connect to a VPN, enter the server name or IP address of the VPN provider in the “VPN server” field. (You can find this information on the VPN provider’s website or in the client software.
) If you want to connect to a specific VPN server, enter the server’s address in the “VPN server” field and the port number of the VPN server in the “Port” field. (For example, if the server is located in the United States and the port is 443, enter “443” in the “Port” field and “USA” in the “VPN server” field.).
To connect to a VPN using the Windows 10 built-in VPN client, click on the “Connect” button. (If the “Connect” button isn’t visible, you may need to enable the VPN client.
) To connect to a VPN using a third-party VPN client, open the VPN client software and click on the “Connect” button.
After you connect to the VPN, you’ll need to copy the VPN’s secret key. (The secret key is a string of characters that allows the VPN to identify itself to the Windows 10 VPN client.) To copy the secret key, open the VPN client software and click on the “ Settings ” button.
(If the “Settings” button isn’t visible, you may need to enable the VPN client.) Under “VPN settings,” click on the “Copy secret key” button.
After you copy the secret key, you can disconnect from the VPN. (To disconnect from the VPN, click on the “ disconnect” button.)
If you want to keep the VPN connected even when you’re not using it, click on the “Keep connected” button. (To disconnect from the VPN without disconnecting from the internet, click on the “disconnect” button, but make sure you reconnect to the VPN later.)
