Avast Software, Inc. is a global software company headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic.

The company develops and distributes antivirus and antispyware software. In 2012, the company was acquired by the Russian company Kaspersky Lab.

The company has been criticized for its ties to the Russian government and its secretive practices. In February 2018, the U.S.

House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology issued a report stating that Avast was “the latest company to be caught up in the Kremlin’s efforts to weaponize cyber threats.” The report found that Avast had “actively collaborated with Russian intelligence services” and had “provided Moscow with access to its customers’ data.”.

The Committee’s report was followed by a bipartisan group of senators urging the U.

Department of Justice to investigate Avast’s ties to the Russian government. While Avast has denied any wrongdoing, the report has raised concerns about the company’s trustworthiness and its interactions with Russian intelligence.
