VPNs are not proxies. A proxy is a tool used to increase the privacy and security of traffic between two locations. A proxy server is a computer that acts as a middleman between you and the website or service you’re trying to access. When you use a proxy, the traffic between your computer and the proxy server is encrypted and sent over a network, often an anonymized one, in order to disguise your identity. VPNs work in a similar way, but they encrypt all of your traffic, not just the traffic between your computer and the VPN server. This makes them a more secure way to browse the internet, since anyone monitoring your traffic will not be able to see what websites you’re visiting or what files you’re downloading.

However, VPNs are not foolproof. If the VPN server is compromised, your traffic could still be intercepted and leaked. Additionally, some VPNs are not designed to protect your privacy, and are instead used to circumvent geo-blocks or access restricted content. In general, VPNs are a useful tool for increasing your privacy and security online, but they are not perfect and should not be relied on to protect your identity from all threats.
