DNS servers are the servers that translate human-readable names like “www.google.com” into numeric IP addresses. When you type in “www.com” into your browser, your computer queries the DNS server for the IP address for that website.

If your computer is connected to the internet, the DNS server will provide an IP address for www.com. If your computer is not connected to the internet, your computer will query a local DNS server for the IP address for www.
