Domain Name System (DNS) is the hierarchical system used to resolve domain names to IP addresses. DNS is used to translate human-readable domain names into the numerical IP addresses used by computers.

DNS is managed by a DNS server.

When a user types in a domain name, the DNS server looks up the domain name in its DNS database. The DNS server returns a list of IP addresses that are associated with the domain name.

The user’s computer then looks up the IP address for the domain name and sends a request to the specified server. The server responds with the requested information.

DNS servers can be located on the same computer or on separate computers. A DNS server can also be a web server that provides DNS services to the Internet.
