Stateful vs. Stateless Firewall

A stateful firewall, also known as a stateful intrusion detection system (SIDS), monitors traffic on a network and blocks or allows traffic based on the state of the traffic. A stateless firewall does not maintain a history of past traffic, so it is not able to block or allow traffic according to its state.

Stateful firewalls can be more effective at protecting a network from attack, because they are able to track and block traffic that is attempts to break into the network. Stateless firewalls are not as effective at blocking attack traffic, because they do not have the ability to track and block traffic based on its state.

Stateful firewalls are typically more expensive than stateless firewalls, but they are also more effective at protecting a network from attack.
