The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical system of naming registries that are used in the Internet. It assigns unique numerical addresses to every host inside the Internet.

The DNS is used to locate the resources a user is looking for, by translating domain names into IP addresses. There are three primary DNS servers: the Domain Name System Servers (DNS-1, DNS-2), and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

ExpressVPN uses the DNS to assign its own domain name, expressvpn.com, to its VPN service.

When a user connects to the VPN, the ExpressVPN servers are able to map their domain name to the user’s IP address, and route the user’s traffic through the ExpressVPN network. This allows users to maintain their privacy and anonymity while using the ExpressVPN service.
