The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, established in the early 1980s. DNS enables a computer to resolve a hostname to an IP address.

When a user types in the name of a website, the DNS system searches for the website’s IP address and connects the user to the website.

IPVanish relies on DNS to provide its users with an easily accessible way to connect to the internet. DNS allows IPVanish to hide its users’ true locations and to bypass government censorship.

IPVanish also uses DNS to prevent users from being tracked online.
