The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) was created to protect the privacy of children who are online. COPPA requires websites that are directed to children to get parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing any information about a child’s online activities.

This consent must be obtained from the parents or guardians of the child. Websites that do not comply with the law may be fined up to $5,000 per violation.
