ProtonVPN is a VPN service owned by a company called Proton Technologies. Proton Technologies is a subsidiary of the Ukrainian defense manufacturer, Mykola Izotov.

ProtonVPN has been accused by the Russian government of being a “tool of the CIA” and of helping to facilitate the 2014 Russian invasion of the Crimea. However, the company has consistently denied these allegations and has instead focused on its privacy features.

In December 2017, ProtonVPN was forced to close its operations in the Netherlands after the Dutch government declared it unlawful to provide services that help people circumvent internet censorship. However, the company has since re-opened its operations in the Netherlands and continues to provide a reliable VPN service.
