Private Internet Access (PIA) is an American-based company that provides VPN services and proxy services. The company was founded in 2006 by John Gilmore and Lee Tien. Gilmore is the company’s chief technology officer and Tien is the company’s chief financial officer. Tien also serves as the company’s president. Private Internet Access is headquartered in the United States. In February 2014, Private Internet Access announced that it had raised $10 million in new funding.

The company’s investors include Fidelity Investments, Index Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners. Private Internet Access has more than 1,500 customers, including Microsoft, Twitter, and Expedia. The company has a A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. In October 2014, Private Internet Access announced that it had acquired the Netherlands-based VPN provider ProtonVPN.
