A DNS server is a computer server that stores the authoritative records for the DNS protocol. When a user requests a website, the DNS server looks up the website’s hostname (e.g. “www.

google.com”) in its database of registered domain name servers. .

The DNS server also allows a user to type in a domain name and see a list of the websites that are hosted on that domain. For example, if a user types in “www.yoursite.

com”, the DNS server would return a list of the websites that are hosted on “yoursite.com” (including any subdomains).

A DNS server also helps to resolve domain names to IP addresses. When a user requests a website, the DNS server will look up the website’s hostname (e.com”) and use the IP address that it finds to resolve the domain name to an actual computer on the internet.
