Domain Name Servers (DNS) are important for domain name registration, website hosting, and any other online activity. When you type a domain name into your browser, the DNS queries your computer’s network interface to find the IP address for that domain name.

A DNS server is like a phone book for the Internet. You can type in a name like “dog.com” and it will return the IP address for the dog.com website. DNS also helps resolve domain name collisions.

For example, if you type in “dog.com” and the DNS server can’t find a record for “dog.net,” the DNS server will return the IP address for dog.com’s parent domain, like “com.”.

Domain name servers are operated by domain name registrars and sometimes by hosting providers. When you create a website, your web host will provide you with a DNS server for your domain name.

You can also use a free DNS service like Google Public DNS or OpenDNS.
