When you type in “www.google.com” into your web browser, the DNS server on your computer checks to see if it can find the IP address for “google.com” in its database of known DNS addresses.

If it can’t find the IP address, the DNS server looks up the IP address for “www.com” in the DNS database.

If the DNS server can’t find the IP address for “www.com”, it then looks up the IP address for “www.

google.com” in the DNS database that is associated with the second-level domain, which in this case is “com”.

The DNS server then returns the IP address for “www.

com” to your web browser.
