The Unix Internet Name Domain (UNIX domain name system, or UDNSS) is the most popular implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS). UDNSS is a distributed naming system that provides name resolution for Unix systems.

It is a superset of the Domain Name System (DNS) provided by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). UDNSS is used by a wide variety of organizations, including commercial providers, universities, and government agencies.

UDNSS was developed at the University of California, Berkeley, in the early 1980s. UDNSS is based on the concepts of the DNS and provides the same type of lookup service. However, UDNSS is a distributed system, so it can support more than one name resolution service.

UDNSS is also more fault-tolerant than the DNS. For example, if a DNS server is down, UDNSS can still offer name resolution services.

UDNSS is used by a variety of organizations, including commercial providers, universities, and government agencies. UDNSS is also popular in the Unix community because it is a superset of the DNS.
