Windows DNS Server is used to provide Domain Name System (DNS) services for a computer. DNS is a hierarchical database of names and addresses that allows computers on the network to communicate with each other. By default, Windows Server 2008 and later versions include a DNS server. You can use the DNS server to resolve domain names (for example, www.microsoft.

com) into IP addresses. You can also use the DNS server to resolve hostnames (for example, server1.contoso.com) into IP addresses.
