Domain name system (DNS) is a hierarchical database of all the hostnames and IP addresses in a domain. When a user requests a website, their computer looks up the website’s hostname (for example, www.google.com) in DNS.

If the computer can’t find the website’s hostname in DNS, the computer will look up the website’s IP address (for example, 173.194.233.222).

DNS is important for two reasons. First, it enables computers to easily find websites by their hostnames.

Second, DNS provides a way for computers to share information about websites, such as the website’s IP address and the domain name that the website is registered under. This enables websites to be easily found across different computers and networks.
