If a DNS server does not have an entry for a requested URL group of answer choices, it will typically return an error message. However, depending on the DNS server configuration, the server may take one of a number of actions.

One action a DNS server may take is to return a referral to another DNS server that does have an entry for the requested URL group of answer choices. This referral may be done using a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or using an IP address.

Another action a DNS server may take is to return a referral to a DNS server that can resolve the requested URL group of answer choices using a name server query. This referral may also be done using a URL or an IP address.

A DNS server that can’t find an answer for a requested URL group of answer choices may also return an error message. In this case, the DNS server may not be able to provide any referrals.
